Course Description

Rapid advances in genetics and genomics is revolutionising the practice of modern medicine and healthcare and as such health and medical services around the globe are preparing their work forces for genomics integration. This Postgraduate Diploma in Genomic Medicine and Healthcare will provide an integrated approach to this interesting subject, and will focus on applying scientific principles to direct patient care. This Postgraduate Diploma is aimed at General Medical Practitioners, Specialist Medical Practitioners (for example working in Paediatrics, General Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Medical Oncology), Nurses (Oncology, Cardiology, Paediatrics, Neurology etc.), Midwives and Allied Health Professionals (Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists). In addition, the course would be of interest to those with related undergraduate degrees (e.g. Dietetics, Biomedical Science and Pharmacy) or equivalent professional qualifications and background experience.

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. Each of the 6 modules have the same assessment format. Students are assessed across the following components of the module: **Clinical case scenarios with case based discussion – 40%** ** Individual learning portfolio – 10%** ** Group/individual activity – 20%** ** Case based examination – 30%**

Admission to the course is typically through the following qualifications:

  • First degree or equivalent (including international qualifications).

  • Relevant professional healthcare (e.g. doctor, nurse) qualifications.

Those without recognised qualifications will be considered on an individual basis and a wide range of prior experience may be taken into account. Applicants seeking to access this mechanism will submit evidence to the Course Director at Learna Ltd. The portfolio will subsequently be examined in liaison with the Course Link at the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education to confirm that they are able to work comfortably at degree level. This process is in line with the University of South Wales’ Regulations.

English language requirements for overseas applicants (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent) are in line with USW requirements for postgraduate study.

Postgraduate Certificate: Students may exit and gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Genomic Medicine and Healthcare after successfully completing 60 credits from the first three modules.
