Course Description

"Learn about the ancient world and find ways to understand the foundations of how we live today. From Ancient Egypt to the rise of Islam in the Middle East. You can also learn what happened during the conquests of Alexander the Great and at the end of the Roman Empire.

Archaeology and Ancient History at Southampton offers you the opportunity to learn in an engaging, supportive and highly successful research environment. Graduates from the Ancient History and Archaeology BA degree have gained employment in heritage management, museums or archaeological research.

We are ranked 5th in the UK for Archaeology in the Complete University Guide, 2023.

You’ll have the chance to engage with topics you are already passionate about, or to try something entirely new. This might mean application of cutting-edge technology to discover and map new sites, or develop complimentary archival research skills.

You'll deepen your understanding of archaeology with at least 3 weeks of practical experience of field work, including excavating archaeological sites and collecting archaeological material from ploughed fields.

Our Digital Humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting edge technology, such as virtual reality, 3D scanners and printers, and a 360 degree fully immersive audio-visual centre.

On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects, and independent learning (studying on your own). You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as examinations, essays, extended essays, practical assignments in both the laboratory and the field, presentations, portfolios and the dissertation. You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate: D plus AB in two A Levels to include English. Preferred:- Performing Arts, Art & Design, Digital Film and Video Production,Business IT, Applied Science,Sport, Sport and Exercise Science

31-30 overall or 665-655 in 3 HL subjects.

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard.

The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
