Course Description

This flexible integrated Masters course focuses on the exploration and understanding of human disease at all levels. It combines biochemistry, physiology, neuroscience, cell biology, genetics and pharmacology. Our biomedical science graduates are in demand in a variety of areas of employment in medicine and healthcare-related professions, or clinical or medical research. Southampton’s biomedical science researchers are making a significant impact on today’s society by investigating potential cures for Alzheimer’s, discovering the causes of cystic fibrosis and improving our understanding of cancer. Your four-year degree will allow you to join a pioneering community who will share their expertise, allowing you to focus on aspects of physiology and/or biochemistry to research level. You will complete an extensive laboratory-based research project in the heart of our state-of-the-art Life Sciences building or with the research groups based at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. 100% of MSci Biomedical Sciences students were satisfied or very satisfied with the teaching of course *University of Southampton analysis of unpublished NSS data 2021.

Accredited by the Royal Society of Biology for the purpose of meeting, in part, the academic and experience requirement of membership and Chartered Biologist (CBiol).

AAA to include Biology or Chemistry and one further science subject. A level science subjects considered include Biology, Human Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Statistics, Psychology, Environmental Studies, Geography and Geology. Science practical components must be passed. General Studies, Critical Thinking and Use of Mathematics are excluded for entry Contextual Offer: AAB including Biology or Chemistry and one further science subject.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject). Applicants must hold GCSE English Language (or GCSE English), Mathematics and Science (minimum grade C/4). English Language proficiency for international students: All programmes at the University of Southampton are taught and assessed in the medium of English (other than those in modern foreign languages). AQA Tech Levels: The University accepts the new AQA Tech Level qualification, which must be offered in combination with at least one A Level. Typical entry criteria for degrees in Engineering will be to achieve an A in the A Level plus D*D in the Tech Level, or A* in the A Level plus DD in the Tech Level.
