Course Description
Study topics from modern cryptography (the art of writing or solving codes) to modelling black holes, and complex financial problems. You'll learn abstract and structured thinking skills while studying mathematics, statistics and operational research.
This course is very broad, allowing you to explore topics like abstract algebra, black holes and relativity, networks, and machine learning.
As part of this course you’ll:
- Develop your abilities in problem-solving, calculation and logical argument
- Be able to specialise in pure or applied mathematics or statistics, or follow a broad path across these topics and more
- Use our student centre, a dedicated learning and social space, exclusively for maths students
- Use mathematical and computational packages such as Python and the statistics package 'R'
You’ll be taught through a combination of lectures and workshops, by leading researchers in fields, such as group theory, the mathematics of nature and experimental design.

The University of Southampton, often abbreviated to Soton, is a research university located in Southampton, England. Although the university was founded in 1862, it has only enjoyed full university status from 1952 onwards. The university has five campuses in total, with the main one based in the Highfield area of Southampton.
