There’s a worldwide shortage of qualified engineers in the petroleum-refining systems-engineering industry. Our MSc is filling that gap by providing you with the teaching you need to become a qualified and successful engineer.
Our course is taught by experts in the industry. It combines technologies, operations and economics with modelling, simulation, optimisation, and process design and integration, giving you a broad understanding of the industry.
We are ranked 4th in the UK and 16th in the world for petroleum engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023.
What you will study
Our MSc will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills you’ll need to pursue engineering careers in the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors.
You’ll gain a thorough understanding of:
Oil refining and associated downstream processing technologies, operations and economics
Process safety and operations integrity
Methods for the optimal design of process systems.
Throughout your studies, you’ll learn about the general economics of the energy sector, oil exploration and production, as well as renewable energy systems.
You’ll also discover more about petroleum refining through our unique work assignments at a virtual oil-refining and chemical company.

A minimum of a 2:2 UK honours degree in either Chemistry, Engineering or Physics, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. We'll also consider relevant work experience if you don't meet these requirements.
English language requirements
IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Writing and 5.5 in each other element.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
