Course Description
The University of Westminster is a pioneer in media education, introducing the first Media Studies degree to the UK. Our expert knowledge and ties to industry have inspired the new Digital Media BA, designed to prepare you for the media roles of the future.
Our Digital Media course will show you how to create and share your message professionally across any digital platform so you can truly connect with your audience. The course is flexible, giving you the time and space to explore different aspects of digital media. All students gain skills in content creation, digital media production, storytelling, and research, alongside a critical appreciation of the role of media in society. Students then build on these practical skills and conceptual insights by choosing a specialism which reflects their interests and aspirations.
At the end of the first year, you will be able to choose from pathways in Media Production, Communication, Public Relations and Advertising, and Journalism. You will have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals throughout the course and can benefit from our industry links by opting to complete a work placement year. Alternatively, you might decide to expand your educational experience by studying aboard between Years 2 and 3. You will also have access to our award-winning Careers and Employability Service with its network of over 3,000 employers.
This up-to-date blend of skills and knowledge will equip you to work successfully in a wide range of sectors and professions in digital media and beyond. Whether you want to work for a leading multinational, a start-up, a media outlet, the public sector or to launch your own company, this course will give you the broad expertise alongside the specialist knowledge you need, both when you enter the job market and into the future.
At the end of the first year, you’ll choose a specialism to study in your second and third year, among the following pathways:
- Digital Media Production: for students who want a practical course focusing on media production, web design, commercial radio and audio storytelling. - Digital Media and Communication: for students who are interested in internet cultures, data and society and media and communication research. The ideal preparation for further postgraduate study. - Digital Media PR and Advertising: for students who want to explore the commercial aspect of marketing communications and consumer culture. - Digital Media and Journalism: for students who want to work in journalism, focusing on stories, multiplatform news, media law and how to launch a publication Your final degree award will reflect this specialism, eg BA (Hons) Digital Media and Journalism. Full-time undergraduate students study 120 credits per year. The following subjects are indicative of what you will study on this course.

The University of Westminster is a publicly funded research university located in London, England. Beginning its existence as a polytechnic institute in 1838, it only became an officially recognized university much later, in 1992.
