The history of the city of Bangor, Maine, is rooted in the lumber and ship-building industries and it's on full display in its museums, where you can travel back in time for an afternoon. If you’re a fan of scary books, you can check out Stephen King’s house which was recently repurposed as a private archive and a writer’s retreat.

When in search of something to do, a common student suggestion (i.e. cheap options) is to wander along the Penobscot River Walkway in the company of your friends, to go hiking/biking through the Bangor City Forest, visit the Farmers Market, or to just hang out at the Bangor Mall. The city offers plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and parks for students to enjoy between classes and for an evening of culture, you can attend one of the many yearly productions of the Penobscot Theatre Company based in the historic Opera House.

Student Opinions About Studying in Bangor

“Most of the places I need to be are within walking distance, including downtown, shopping malls, dining areas, library and the waterfront. It’s not a metropolitan city, so don’t expect the typical city experience here. Personally, I was looking for a place to study where I wouldn’t be distracted by all that, and Bangor works for me.”

“Living downtown can be expensive but it’s still more affordable than the national average. I like the variety of outdoor activities there are to do, in particular I enjoy my walks with my dog in Cascade Park.”

“There are decent restaurants and stores all around Bangor. There’s not much cultural diversity, which is unfortunate, but the locals tend to be kind and welcoming to foreigners in any case. Many people leave their front doors unlocked and their cars running, so I would say there’s a culture of trust and community that you simply can’t find in a bigger city.”

Bangor Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • There are plenty of forests and recreational spaces in the area where students can disconnect and take a break from the academic side of life.

  • The unemployment rate is quite low, so it’s easier for students to find a part-time job.

  • It has been described as one of the safest places to live in the country both statistically and according to residents.

CONS

  • The locals can seem rude to newcomers, but they say that with time you get used to the way they are.
  • One of the most common complaints is, the pace of life is slow here, which some people like but many young students do not. It’s a question of taste.
