With Canberra being the capital city of Australia and having world-class education, it attracts students from both Australia and around the world. Canberra is a diverse student city with superb infrastructure, including the best roads in the country and extensive cycling and walking paths. There are many open natural spaces to enjoy and a unique quietness to the city that residents often highlight.

PROS

  • Australia is known to be one of the safest places to live in, but Canberra in particular, has the lowest crime rates compared to other cities in Australia.
  • Canberra offers top-notch education, which is often one of the main reasons for students to study there.
  • Hiking and biking are the preferred sports among Canberrans due to the high number of roads, paths, and natural spaces to enjoy these activities with.

CONS

  • The public transport isn’t as good as in other cities, having just one rail service and buses that aren’t as frequent as students would like.
  • Renting is quite expensive, so students often need to get a part-time job or save up before arriving.
  • Students love to study near the seaside, especially in Australia. However, Canberra is an inland city so the nearest beach is two hours away.

Student Opinions About Studying in Canberra

“Canberra has a town feel to it, which I appreciate, as it’s not like the busy and noisy city that I used to live in. I would recommend having a car if you plan living here, as the public transport is simply unreliable in most cases.”

“What I like the most about studying here is that everyone is focused on their studies but we balance it with a good social life, and outdoor sports to enjoy the views and the weather.”

“The locals here think that a 30 minute drive is a long commute, which is funny for me coming from Boston. Needless to say, everything is fairly close, but a car is needed. It’s quite far from the nearest beach, so anybody thinking about living here should be aware that it’s not the image of Australia that you might have in your mind!”
