Student Opinions About Studying in Montreal

“If you’re someone who doesn’t speak French but just relies on their English, it’s very easy to accidentally find yourself just socialising with other English speakers, especially in McGill. This is a mistake that you should try to avoid, and jump into the challenge of learning a new language.”

“Montreal puts a lot of emphasis on art, especially in public spaces. There are an infinite number of exhibitions and art festivals to enjoy, you’ll probably never get around to seeing them all. I especially appreciate how normal it is for musicians to perform in the subway here. There are also plenty of historic places to see, and museums.”

“Since the city of Montreal is such a massive attraction for students, you feel at home here as an international student because you know most of the other young people around here are international too, so I don’t feel like I stand out much. Also the locals are friendly and welcoming.”

Montreal Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Montreal has the reputation of being the most enjoyable place to live as a student in Canada, and some would even argue it’s the most fun place to live in the world. Between nightlife, sports, culture, art, and the opportunity to mix with students from every other university in the city, Montreal will rock you because it has so much to offer.

  • Full-time students are entitled to a specially priced public transit pass with reduced fares for all public transport in the city.

  • There are seven universities to choose from in Montreal, and the majority of them are nationally and internationally prestigious. They also cover distinct academic areas. For example, the Polytechnique Montréal focuses on engineering subjects, some of which are not offered anywhere else in the city.

CONS

  • As a possible negative it’s a must to speak French in Montreal. Speaking French will multiply your social opportunities, and keep you out of embarrassing situations. You can survive without French, but why just survive when you can enjoy yourself?

  • Taxes are among the highest in Canada, which has a noticeable and negative impact on earnings.

  • The job market for young students is a challenge for many. A common point of view is that the best way to find a good job is by knowing the right person, which is just another reason to keep working on your French.
