Ottawa is Canada’s capital and enjoys a reputation as a bilingual city of natural beauty, with a strong sector of government workers, famous ink rinks, and wheat-based pastries known as Beavertails.

Popular student pastimes are taking advantage of the city’s appreciation for music by going to festivals like Bluesfest, or the Ottawa International Jazz Festival. If you’re in the mood for learning, Ottawa offers its War Museum, Aviation and Space Museum, and many more.

Knowing French is not as essential in Ottawa as other parts of Canada, but it is still highly recommended that those who move here set themselves to the task of learning it as it will benefit them in every way.

PROS

  • The city has been listed as one of the most educated cities in the world according to a study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania. This is likely related to Ottawa being home to a variety of prestigious universities, which attracts many international students.

  • Ottawa has a high ratio of green spaces to residents. The majority of neighbourhoods are within walking distance of one of the city’s scenic parks or bike paths, which connect with the riverside.

  • This is a city that uses U-Pass, a student discount program for public transport. Students are entitled to their U-Pass once they have paid the tuition fees for their university which is participating in the U-Pass program.

CONS

  • This is a small city compared to some others in Canada, and even though there are plenty of activities to take advantage of, there are not so many activities to enjoy, compared to other cities. If you’re clear about the things you like to do with your time, it’s no problem for you.

  • While speaking French is not absolutely essential, it should still be a priority for those who move here in order to maximise their social and professional opportunities. This could represent a significant obstacle for some.

  • The majority of job offerings available in Ottawa are related to engineering and government positions. Many have reported difficulty in finding employment outside of these sectors.

Student Opinions About Studying in Ottawa

“The cost of living here in Ottawa is a bit higher than the national average, but we also have slightly higher than average salaries. The best piece of advice I can give to those moving to Ottawa to study is to live near the university you’re going to. The rental prices tend to be lower in the student zones, and you can cut out transport costs.”

“Ottawa is a phenomenal place to live if what you like is being able to go out and enjoy natural spaces just minutes away from an urban setting. There are so many places to enjoy hiking, swimming, and climbing. In winter you can of course work on your skiing in the nearby hills.”

“I studied at the University of Ottawa, which was an amazing experience by itself, but I had a difficult time even finding job ads that weren’t related to high tech positions, or government office jobs. The city doesn’t create a lot of entry level jobs that students could balance with their studies.”
