Applied learning
Work placements
You’ll have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career, as well as useful industry contacts. Previous placement years have taken place at organisations such as 3M, BAE Systems, Hoya Lens UK, Microsoft, River Island and Asda.
There’s also an opportunity to receive support in running your own business during this time. The Placement Year Enterprise Scheme allows you to receive a bursary from the University's Research and Innovation Office, alongside useful advice and facilities in the business centre. This support is also available for up to five years after you graduate.
Field trips
You’ll have the opportunity to attend field trips throughout your time on the course. Recent field trips include students running pop-up shops at Sheffield Maker’s Market in St Mary’s Church & Conference Centre, and working with local secondary schools to deliver creative activity workshops to pupils.
Networking opportunities
You’ll have plenty of networking opportunities throughout the course – with frequent guest speakers, a placement year and a close relationship with the local business community and our alumni. There’s also extensive extracurricular activity in this field, particularly from the highly active, student-run Enterprise Society.
