Course Description

OVERVIEW

UWS's BA English as a Second Language is a top-up degree which is designed for EU and international students for whom English is not their native language but who are looking to become proficient in English and to expand their knowledge of intercultural identities, teacher education, and analysing discourse.

The degree will provide you with English language skills that will open up a range of career opportunities with organisations around the world.

This one or two-year course offers entry at degree year level, building on your studies from your home institution, with a range of core and optional modules on Academic English, Cultural Studies, Teacher Training, Dissertation Research, Business English and many more

With an emphasis on small group teaching, you will study all aspects of the English language. You will refine and expand your knowledge and understanding of the language and its cultures, with a focus on authentic language development.

Graduates from this degree will be fully confident of using English as a global language in the world of education or business.

The degree also offers an opportunity to those who intend to train, as TESOL professionals, and teach English in the UK or internationally to develop these skills through the optional Theory and Practice in English Language Teaching Module.

UWS's BA English as a Second Language is only open to students who are second-language speakers of English.

Further Study

Upon graduation, our students have continued their studies at postgraduate level (MA, MEd, MSc) in TESOL, Education, Social Sciences, Business and other related areas.

Classes develop languages skills through group discussions, presentations and reading and writing tasks. Lessons use a combination of the latest English language resources and authentic materials. The maximum class size is 25 students. Classes are usually 3 hours in duration (e.g. 0900-1200) and, during this time, there will be a short break of approximately 15 minutes. The assessment varies from module to module, but it typically involves a combination of presentations, portfolios, written assignment and class tests.

Additional fee information

  • TUITION FEE INFORMATION - SCOTTISH STUDENTS:

Eligible Scottish domiciled students can usually apply to have their tuition fees paid for them each year of their studies by the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS). If you're not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS. You need to apply to SAAS each year of study to have your tuition fees paid directly to UWS.

  • TUITION FEE INFORMATION - UK, IRISH & GIBRALTARIAN STUDENTS:

Eligible students who are domiciled in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland as well as from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Gibraltar or the Republic of Ireland will qualify for tuition fees of £9,250 per academic session of study to a maximum of three years if you are studying on a four year bachelor degree course (eg. BAcc (Hons) / BA (Hons) / BEng (Hons) / BSc (Hons)). So, if your degree is four years' duration, you will only be charged tuition fees for three years. Similarly, if you are studying a five year integrated master's degree course (eg. MEng (Hons)) the you will only be charged tuition fees for four years.

  • TUITION FEE INFORMATION - INTERNATIONAL (NON-EU) & EU STUDENTS:

These tuition fees apply to all non-EU, EEA, and all other EU students (excluding those from Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar, whose fee level is as per UK (non-Scottish) students - see section above for more details).

For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
