Student Opinions About Studying in Baltimore

“When I first moved in I made the mistake of choosing Inner Harbour just because it was a safe part of the city, but what I didn’t think about was that it’s a huge tourist attraction, which made daily life kind of annoying in a lot of ways.”

“Maryland is a great place to live in itself, but I also love how well-positioned it is for driving out to other cities like Philadelphia and New York if you need to. It’s also not far from Deep Creek, where you can ski in the winter and swim in the lake when the weather’s good.”

“Baltimore is a city full of character, as well as great ways to spend your time. It has lots of international restaurants, professional sports teams to support, as well as historical landmarks, and an abundance of venues to see concerts and performance arts in.”

PROS

  • Many report that getting a job within 3-6 months is quite realistic in Baltimore, as there is a steady flow of positions becoming available. The main sectors offering work in the city include car manufacturing, transportation, and steelwork. Additionally, there has been a recent trend of tech-related businesses appearing in the city, widening the scope for potential employment opportunities.

  • Rent prices tend to be very reasonable in Baltimore, with the average price for a furnished 2-bedroom apartment being $1,350. Be sure to choose your neighbourhood according to where you need to be every day, and also based on the crime rates in the area.

  • Baltimore’s nightlife is vibrant, so you won’t have to look very far to find plenty of bars, lounges, and even dancing in venues like the Havana Club if that’s what you’re looking for.

CONS

  • The first complaint that comes to mind for many when asked about Baltimore is its excessive traffic, and the difficulty involved in trying to park your car in the street anywhere close to the Downtown area.

  • Tuition fees for universities in Baltimore are higher than most, but in the case of Johns Hopkins for example, that is because it’s one of the best universities in the world.

  • Baltimore’s income tax is the highest in the state of Maryland, at around 3.2%, which many will agree has an important impact on their earnings.
