Student Opinions About Studying in Milwaukee

“It’s helpful to know a little bit about the districts here in Milwaukee. Downtown is great for staying well connected to everything, but it can be a challenge to get a nicer apartment for a decent price, but if you’re not fussy about the decoration you can find something nice. Third Bay is probably the most expensive area in general, while Riverwest is known for having good bars and restaurants but also the highest crime rates.”

“It’s quite easy to make friends in Milwaukee since most people have some disposable income to go out for a few drinks after hours. It really helps getting to know people better when they can afford to go out and socialize.”

“The northern side of the city is a little bit dangerous depending on what street you’re on and what time of the day it is, but in general the people in Milwaukee are extremely welcoming and friendly.”

Milwaukee Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Milwaukee offers a lot of entry level jobs compared to other job markets in the country, especially when it comes to call centers and waitering occupations.

  • The average rental prices for 2-bedroom apartments are relatively affordable in Milwaukee, at around $1,265. Prices differ enormously depending on which neighbourhood you look at however, so it’s recommended to choose a zone that’s affordable, yet also well situated for your personal needs.

  • The cost of living in Milwaukee is roughly in line with the national averages, with the exception of housing which is more affordable. This benefit allows residents to save their money for other activities that the city has to offer, such as the Milwaukee Public Museum, performances in their Marcus Centre for the Performing Arts, or the innumerable high-quality dining options available here.

CONS

  • The public transport on offer in Milwaukee is not the most reliable way to get around, as many buses only drive out as far as 124th street to the West and then go back. Many residents feel that owning a car is a must in this city.

  • The possibility of becoming a victim of violent crime in Milwaukee is undeniably high. Newcomers should educate themselves on precautions they may wish to take.

  • Milwaukee suffers some traffic congestion during rush hour, which is due to many people using cars instead of the less-than-perfect public transport.
