Student Opinions About Studying in New Orleans

“New Orleans has a reputation for having great restaurants all over the place, and I can attest that nine times out of ten this is true. Even when you grab some food in a gas station the food is usually very good. The city even has a festival based on shrimp, which shows you how they feel about food.”

“It depends on which sector you’re applying for, but it isn’t unusual for job hunts to last up to a year in New Orleans. Those who are planning on moving here should have some contingency plans in place first.”

“In my opinion, I think the crime situation is exaggerated. I grew up here, and I’m currently studying at the University of New Orleans, and even walking home late I don’t feel threatened or anything. Most of the time a little situational awareness is more than enough to keep you out of any bad situations.”

New Orleans Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • New Orleans is known for its almost constant supply of festivals and parades, which residents say breathe a lot of life and character into the city. Example festivals include Mardi Gras, the Fried Chicken Festival, and Shrimp Festival.

  • As far as the cost of living, the average asking price for a 2-bedroom apartment is around $1,680, but there are many liveable neighbourhoods where a comfortable apartment can be found for less money, such as Freret, and Old Aurora.

  • The city is home to a vibrant nightlife scene, which usually favours relaxed bars and lounges, but there are also plenty of nightclubs for those who want to party a little harder.

CONS

  • The public transport in New Orleans does not receive a lot of love from the locals, as the buses are considered unreliable by most people, and there is no subway service. The bus service is the preferred means of getting around here.

  • Employment opportunities can be hard to come by In New Orleans, and the local economy is mostly based around oil and gas, or hospitality and tourism. New Orleans may not be the best city for those who specialise in tech positions.

  • Sadly, New Orleans doesn’t have any beaches to offer its residents for a quick getaway. That said, if you truly want to go to the beach you can reach Biloxi Beach in about an hour and a half.
