Norfolk is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It has played an important role in the region’s history due to its location in the Hampton Roads natural harbour, where Chesapeake Bay flows into the Atlantic.

Home to one of the world’s largest naval bases, Naval Station Norfolk, Norfolk is a modern metropolitan area with miles of river and beachfront property, including several sandy beaches on the Bay. The city also boasts some truly outstanding museums and the beautiful Harrison Opera House.

Aside from the usual restaurants, shops and bars typical to big cities, there are countless attractions and things to do when you need a break from studying. One option that is a little out of the ordinary is Nauticus, the National Maritime Center, a maritime science centre and museum which has interactive exhibits, aquariums, a hd film theatre, educational activities and the USS Wisconsin battleship.

Student Opinions About Studying in Norfolk

“Downtown is the best place for eating out and shopping, and getting to the beach is super easy. There are so many things to do and learn about the city. The town is quite diverse and the people are friendly. Despite the supposedly high crime rate, I’ve never felt unsafe here.”

“The traffic here, especially around military bases and schools, is quite bad, so if you don’t have to drive, don’t, or you’ll end up getting stressed out. Making different kinds of friends is easy in Norfolk, it’s such a diverse place.”

“If you enjoy going out at night then this is a good place for you, with a lot of places staying open late and events going on. Restaurants are varied and the music venues are too. It’s a lovely place, full of nature, with beaches and rivers that encourage you to get out and participate in the different watersports around.”
