Notre Dame is known for being a culturally diverse city with a large student population, and a place that doesn’t suffer the high cost of living and severe traffic usually associated with metropolitan cities. In the town center you can find the Morris Performing Arts Center where you can find live music, stand-up comedy, and Broadway shows being hosted. Lake Michigan beaches and the sand dunes are one of the most popular hangouts for residents, and they’re not far from the campuses here.

Student Opinions About Studying in Notre Dame

“It’s a small but charming city, with its own traditions and ways of life. The housing looks a little run down in some areas, but the most important thing for me is that the rent rates here are fairly low. There are plenty of activities to do downtown, and visiting Chicago for a day trip is never a bad idea for a day out.”

“There are several scenic parks around the city that I like to go to, and lots of community gardens where you can spend an afternoon with friends. Downtown is pretty cool too, with restaurants and bars that give residents different ways of enjoying their weekends.”

“Focusing on your academics is easy here as it’s a small and quiet town, so there aren’t many distractions. You get to know many people because the three campuses are practically together, so all three student populations end up socialising, effectively multiplying your chances of finding people to connect with.”

Notre Dame Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Well-known for being a college town, so there are many students, which makes it easy for everyone to socialise and meet new people every week.

  • The cost of living is lower than in many other cities, especially in terms of rental rates around the city. This means that those looking for accommodation will be able to find better quality apartments for less money.

  • Enjoying a reputation as something of a foodie location, there are numerous popular restaurants in the downtown area with plenty of international variety and price points.

CONS

  • Many people mention that a significant number of buildings around the city need renovation, as there are many properties that are not being used and thus become degraded.
