Student Opinions About Studying in Rochester

“As an international student, I made the mistake of only looking at what classes and majors the University of Rochester had to offer, but I should have looked at what the city is like too because I was expecting there to be as many things to do here as there are to do in New York City, and that’s not the case. There’s definitely a lot to enjoy in Rochester, but it’s not a big city by any means.”

“If winter sports aren’t really your thing then there really isn’t a lot you can do outdoors realistically between late October and May because of the harsh winter climate in Rochester.”

“The art and culture on offer here are really fascinating, engaging, and well presented, and there are a few good places where you can go out and have a drink with your friends. My advice though would be to go out to bars sparingly, otherwise you’ll end up feeling like you’re going to the same places all the time.”

Rochester Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • There is a good variety of jobs to be found in Rochester,, especially within the universities. People can also generally expect to find entry-level work in the technology sector, especially in call centers.

  • Considering that Rochester is located in the well-known state of New York, living expenses are not as high as some might expect. The average price of a 2-bedroom apartment is approximately $1,300, a reasonable rent if shared with a roommate.

  • Rochester has a reputation for being a safe place to live,, especially in the suburban areas. In any case, newcomers to the city should investigate the neighborhood they may decide to live in.

CONS

  • Those planning on living in Rochester should be prepared for very cold winters. Of course, the temperatures are low but a factor that many fail to consider is that the hours of daylight are significantly shorter in winter, and all in all this can make a significant impact on residents' social lives, and ultimately mental health as well, according to some locals. With a good pair of boots, a thick coat, and a great attitude, there shouldn’t be a problem for people who don’t mind the cold.

  • Rochester is often described as a place that isn’t well suited to young people looking to get into competitive careers, as the city’s Downtown area doesn’t generate the kind of cosmopolitan activity necessary for that.
