Key Course Facts

Course Description

The Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies has a vibrant community of home and international students, which makes us the largest Welsh and Celtic graduate school in the UK. Students are drawn by our world-class reputation as a centre for research and in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2014) we maintained our reputation for academic publications that are considered ‘internationally excellent’ and ‘world-leading’. Aberystwyth’s international reputation as a research centre for Welsh and Celtic scholars is supported by its facilities. Our postgraduate study room is stocked with a broad range of dictionaries, reference books, journals and periodicals. You will also have access to the Department’s own research library, the Thomas Jones Collection, as well as the outstanding holdings of the University’s own Hugh Owen Library. The National Library of Wales, with its unrivalled collections of manuscripts, archives, printed material and sound and moving image archive, is only a five-minute walk from the Department. Candidates should have a good initial degree in a Celtic language or a cognate subject. Please contact us for more information on scholarships for home and international students. The Department is part of the Institute of Arts & Humanities (IHA). Our graduates also benefit from this wider intellectual community as well as the collaborative research venture between Aberystwyth and Bangor Universities: The Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies(IMEMS). Regular research seminars and public lectures are also organised by neighbouring institutions: The University of Wales Centre for Welsh and Celtic Studies and the National Library of Wales.
