Course Description

The devolution of the Welsh Government and the introduction of the Welsh Language Act has meant that the ability to speak and understand Welsh at a high and intellectual level is attractive to employers. As Welsh laws increase, so does the demand for lawyers who have the ability to handle and discuss the law through the medium of Welsh and within a Welsh context.

The intention of this program is to prepare a student for contemporary Wales and beyond.

The Law is a diverse subject that continues to evolve as it responds to social, economic and political developments. It governs all aspects of our daily lives, from disputes between neighbors and protecting the environment to matters of employment and healthcare provision. In a modern, democratic society, the law exists to ensure justice.

The Professional Welsh element is taught by the Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies. On this course you will develop skills related to using the Welsh language confidently in a wide range of professional contexts and within the workplace. You will be taught by staff with extensive experience in areas such as translation, creative writing, studying and promoting heritage, editing and publishing.

Why study LLB Law / Professional Welsh at Aberystwyth University?

This program is jointly taught by the Department of Law and Criminology and the Department of Welsh and Celtic Studies.

As well as the basic law modules, which include those required to become a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales (achieving a 'Qualifying Degree in Law'), we also offer a range of modules elective covering traditional and contemporary legal topics.

A number of Law and Criminology modules can be studied through the medium of Welsh.

The Department of Law and Criminology offers wide opportunities to develop communication skills. The Controversial Society is open to all students in the department and gives members the opportunity to develop a mock court of law competition.
