Course Description

If you know you want to work within Primary Education, this is the course for you.

This course has been specifically written with; Primary School Head Teachers, providers of Primary Teacher training and Multi Academy Trust Leaders, resulting in a bespoke Foundation Degree for those that have aspirations to become a Primary School Teacher.

Work based Learning has been included within all modules throughout the programme. Allowing you the maximum time for work placement, the course will be delivered on one day per week at Truro and timetabled from 12.45pm to 8.30pm. Ensuring that a clear link between theory and practice of Primary Education is understood, learners are required to gain 15 hours per week of employment or placements, in an educational setting.

The course is based on the Education Subject Benchmark, ensuring that learners are equipped with skills and knowledge to the standards expected of graduates by the Department for Education. Graduates will leave the course with knowledge of the importance of research informed teaching as well as understanding the curriculum before and after each Key Stage.

Truro and Penwith College has excellent links with Cornwall Teaching School, Cornwall Maths and IT Hubs, Cornwall School Centred Teacher Training and Truro and Penwith Academy Trust. These links gives the course a variety of guest speakers and opportunities for students. With the increased focus and importance of curriculum within educational settings, the course includes modules such as - Curriculum: Science and Technology, Curriculum: English and Mathematics, Creative Education and Health and Wellbeing.

Learners will also have the opportunity to investigate different approaches to impact on student learning. Regular individual tutorial support and guidance is a strong feature of this course and study skills sessions are provided in the University level building.

To allow progression on to top-up Education qualifications, the course has been mapped clearly and is highly recognised by local Initial Teacher Training Providers. Students undertaking the FdA Teaching and Learning may progress onto the BA (Hons) Education and Training at Truro & Penwith College. Upon completion of the FdA Teaching and Learning, students may be suited to work in a variety of settings and these opportunities include, but are not limited to working in the following sectors:

  • Entry onto undergraduate pathways for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

• Children’s services
