Course Description
The banking and finance sector has a direct influence on wider society as well as the global economy and is therefore subject to rigorous regulation. You will investigate the impact of regulation, how banks create value for stakeholders and how the banking and finance sector is responding to the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact of its health, social and economic fallout.
MSc Banking and Finance builds on your existing knowledge of finance, economics or business to prepare you for a challenging and rewarding career in the banking sector.
You’ll explore bank efficiency, bank failures and crises, regulatory frameworks and risk. You’ll investigate the challenges of modern banking and understand how innovation in financial technology has disrupted the sector.
MSc Banking and Finance covers contemporary banking and finance issues, such as:
- portfolio management
- modern banking methods
- bank strategy and risk
- regulation and the internationalisation process
This course is taught at Essex Business School at our Colchester Campus. Our students and staff join us from all over the world and our teaching is grounded in contemporary issues and professional practice.

You’ll learn to use our Bloomberg Financial Markets Lab, which gives you access to the data and analytical tools found in financial institutions across the City of London and throughout the world.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.

About University of Essex
The University of Essex, is a public, research university where curiosity prevails and thinking outside the box isn’t just encouraged, it’s expected. Based in the county of the same name, Essex, the main campus is located in Wivenhoe Park, near Colchester. It is home to the university’s three faculties, Humanities, Science & Health and Social Sciences, as well as a very large community of local rabbits, and other small fauna typical of the English countryside.
