Course Description

The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is the graduate entry route to those who want to become a Primary or Secondary teacher in Scotland. The PGDE is an internationally recognised qualification, newly qualified teachers will be able to apply for qualified teacher status (QTS) or equivalent in their home country.

Why PGDE German and Spanish at Strathclyde? This course is a professional training course which qualifies you to teach secondary education. The qualification is recognised throughout the world and is regulated by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and the Scottish Government. You learn from on-campus classes and 18 weeks of placements in schools in Scotland. The qualification allows you to teach in locations worldwide. If you're a Scottish, rest of UK or EU student, you're guaranteed a job for one year in a Scottish school after you graduate.

Your Career A degree in education will equip you for a range of careers working with children and young people. Most of our PGDE graduates go on to work as teachers in secondary schools across the country.

Higher English (A-C) or equivalent.

The entry requirements for PGDE courses are based on the requirements set by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). A degree (preferably Honours) with at least 80 SCQF credit points in the language you wish to teach and have six months residency before course starts. The applicant's academic study must include an element which will allow them to contribute to the wider aspects of programmes of study in schools, such as literature, cultural studies, area studies or languages in work. While living abroad, the applicant must have fully taken part in the language and culture of the relevant country. You will also require 80 credits in the second language and must have three months residency before course starts. If you are a native speaker, then you will require a degree in own language.

Additional fee information

Undergraduate students who live in Scotland will usually have their tuition fees paid by the Student Awards Agency Scotland SAAS. If you have previously attended university or college or are not sure about your eligibility, you should contact SAAS to check your eligibility to have your fees paid. SAAS will pay your tuition fees directly to Strathclyde.

Most undergraduate students from the rest of the UK England, Wales and Northern Ireland will receive a free year of tuition as, assuming no change in Rest of UK fees policy over the period, the total amount payable by undergraduate students will be capped. For students commencing study next session, this is capped at £27,750 with the exception of the MPharm and Integrated Masters courses; MPharm students pay £9,250 for each of the four years. Students studying on Integrated Masters degree programmes pay an additional £9,250 for the Masters year with the exception of those undertaking a full-year industrial placement where a separate placement fee will apply.

London costs approx 34% more than average, mainly due to rent being 67% higher than average of other cities. For students staying in student halls, costs of water, gas, electricity, wifi are generally included in the rental. Students in smaller cities where accommodation is in walking/biking distance transport costs tend to be significantly smaller.
