Student Opinions About Studying in Charlotte

“There are a lot of places to live in Charlotte which make it realistic to walk or bike to where you need to be, but depending on which neighbourhood you live in you might have to depend on using a car, and that tends to take 10-20 minutes to get pretty much anywhere in the city.”

“Charlotte has a lot to do, such as dining and bar options, and plenty of festivals and events throughout the city. The cost of living is quite low here, and it helps a lot getting started that it’s fairly easy to get a job.”

“If you’re an outdoor person the first place you’ll want to visit is the U.S National Whitewater Center which is the world’s premier outdoor facility, where you can enjoy white water rafting, zip lines, live music, and local craft beers.”

Charlotte Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • A significant portion of Charlotte’s residents were not born and raised here, but are either from another state or another country, so international students feel that they blend in easily here.

  • Charlotte has one of the fastest growing job markets in the country, so there are lots of opportunities to be had. Among the most prevalent industries for employment we find aerospace & defence, automotive, biotechnology & pharmaceuticals, business & financial services, and energy.

  • Charlotte’s cost of living score is below the national average, even if not by a large margin but it still has a cumulative impact on the savings of the city’s residents.

CONS

  • A significant number of black residents express that they have experienced some form of racism here, whether it be getting stopped in the street while walking or running in their neighbourhood, or from other residents. This doesn’t apply to every area, but it is something to be aware of.

  • There is a light rail and bus service, but many locals don’t use it because it’s not the most reliable service. Instead, many Charlotte residents depend on the use of a car, and they recommend others to do the same.
