Edmonton is best known for its sunny weather (by Canadian standards), for being a centre for government job positions, and for its operations based on gas and oil extraction.

The universities on offer in Edmonton are generally located very centrally, which keeps students within arm’s reach of the city’s main streets such as Whyte Avenue in the case of the University of Alberta, or the downtown area in the case of MacEwan University.

Student Opinions About Studying in Edmonton

“When it comes to socialising, people tend to meet up around Whyte Avenue, but students usually just stay on campus grounds. The city is a bit on the small side, but there’s something to do for every interest and hobby. The best bars on Whyte Avenue are the Black Dog, and the Strat.”

“In my opinion you need a car to enjoy Edmonton to the fullest. The public transport is usually well organised, but it just takes too long to get from one side to the other for it to be worth it. You live quite a bit better in Edmonton with a car, and the gasoline is cheap since the town is an oil extraction center.”

“I graduated from my nursing program at the University of Alberta last year. I was able to find a full-time position as a nurse around 5 months after graduating. I’m convinced that my job search was so short because of the respect employers have for the university.”

Edmonton Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Edmonton’s minimum wage is among the highest in all of Canada, at C$15 per hour, which could make life easier for students thinking about finding work to pair with their study routine.

  • The city boasts the highest amount of parkland per capita in Canada, and has a bike path which connects to all the most frequented areas of Edmonton. Since this city has the most sunshine of anywhere in the country, using your bike to get around could be a realistic and safe possibility.

  • The average young person’s living expenses come to roughly C$1,183, without factoring in rent costs. Gasoline is particularly affordable thanks to a large part of Edmonton’s industry being based on gas and oil extraction.

CONS

  • Many agree that Edmonton is not the best city in Canada when it comes to nightlife, but there are still plenty of options for local restaurants and outdoor activities.

  • The city has a slightly higher crime rate than many others, but it’s important to remember that this is Canada and the crime rates are generally not something to be too concerned about.

  • As the city is located so far north, the daylight during winter only lasts a few hours, so many people experience going to work or university in the dark and coming back when it’s dark again.
