Student Opinions About Studying in Minneapolis

“The landscape here is stunning at times, since we have so many lakes and all four seasons unlike other parts of the country, which I personally like because I love Autumn. That said, we don’t have any ocean or mountains, and the terrain is pretty flat, but you can use that to your advantage by getting around town on your bike.”

“If you get tired of the outdoors, there’s the Mall of America where you can find an aquarium, a massive movie theatre, innumerable restaurants, and even a virtual reality theme park. It’s a great place to hang out with your friends sometimes, especially in the middle of winter.”

"Minneapolis can be a difficult city to move to, even for those coming from other US cities, but especially for newcomers from other countries. The reason being that the residents here have a tendency of staying friends with all the same characters that they grew up with, which can make it very difficult to get inside their social bubble and become accepted as one of the group. Don’t get discouraged though, it just takes a little longer than usual.”

Minneapolis Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • Employment possibilities are abundant in Minneapolis due to the city being home to a significant number of Fortune 500 companies, including Target and other similar stores which are great opportunities for students to get part-time work to pair with their studies.

  • Minneapolis is a great city for festivals and public events, such as the Lyn Lake Street Festival, the Food Truck Festival, or the Basilica Block Party. If you’re not out having a good time and socialising in Minneapolis, it’s not for a lack of options.

  • The public transport system, many residents agree, is highly reliable, fast, efficient, and clean. The buses are punctual and frequent and have been ranked 11st best public transport system in the country. Students may be entitled to significant discounts depending on whether their university or college is participating in the U-Pass program.

CONS

  • Minneapolis has some of the highest income tax rates in the country, which has a negative impact on peoples’ salaries. This might be more acceptable if other costs of living compensated for this fact, but it is not the case.

  • The cost of renting a 2-bedroom apartment in Minneapolis is on average $1,725, a figure decidedly above the national average. To make matters a little bit worse, Minneapolis has a cost of living statistics that are higher than the national average across the board.
