Student Opinions About Studying in New York

“The best perk about living in New York City for me is that the city is so alive, and there’s always an infinity of events to check out if you know where to look.”

“A good way to quickly start to settle in and feel at home in NYC after moving here is to keep your eyes open for posters advertising events, especially those put up on campus grounds. Something I’ve learned in my time here is that this city attracts all kinds of incredible, talented and smart people, so you really have the opportunity to find your people and make connections.”

“When you’re looking for an apartment to rent, everyone should be aware that there are a lot of landlords who will try to force you into paying a lot of money in advance, but the law is that they can only ask for a maximum of a security deposit worth the same amount as one month’s rent. If they insist on more money, just keep looking for another flat, and don’t get discouraged!”

New York Key Facts for International Students

PROS

  • The city is so large and distinct according to which neighbourhood you are in, that there are many price levels for those who are looking for an apartment to rent. As a broad rule of thumb, house hunters shouldn’t expect rents of less than $1,200 per month even for the most basic of apartments.

  • NYC’s public transport is not known for its comfort, but it is known for being reliable when it comes to getting thousands of New Yorkers to their destinations every day. Students should ask their university administration for a Student MetroCard.

  • When it comes to healthcare, lower income student visa holders over the age of 19 are eligible to sign up for Essential Plan, New York’s Basic Health Program. Those who are new to the city should check their eligibility for the scheme as soon as possible.

CONS

  • As is to be expected from living in a giant metropolis like New York City, competition for every job advertised is fierce, which can be discouraging at first. It’s recommendable to have a backup plan in place in case the job hunt lasts longer than expected.

  • Rent prices are undeniably high in the majority of areas. Many people live with multiple roommates just to divide the rent and make it affordable. Living with so much company may not be for everyone.

  • Living in New York City is synonymous with waiting in long lines wherever you go. If you’re a tourist this is acceptable, but if you live here it can be tiresome.
