Course Description

When choosing to study the BA Welsh and History degree at Aberystwyth University you will divide your time between two very prestigious departments. In the Welsh element of this degree, attractive, interesting and relevant courses are presented to our way of seeing Wales and the world through the Welsh language.

During your time as a student in this Welsh language department you will have a choice of a large variety of modules that span a wide range of interests and become a natural part of the buzz associated with the Department. You will be taught by experts who are pioneers in their field and you will follow an exciting and challenging course.

When following the history element of this degree, you will have the opportunity to study a variety of historical periods and develop your historical interests, broadening and deepening your knowledge and understanding of the subject. Most of us are curious about the past and about the way human society has evolved over time. As well as being interesting in itself, studying an element of history offers a vision that can help us understand the events of the world today. This degree will enable you to put the past in perspective and foster analytical interpretation and communication skills, which are so important in everyday life.

History has been taught in Aberystwyth since 1872, which means that our department is the oldest in Wales and one of the earliest in Britain. We were rated highly by our students in the Annual Student Survey (NSS). Our subject areas range from early to modern history, political history, social history, economic and cultural history.

There is a fascinating range of individual courses available in the Department, which reflect the latest research interests of our lecturers: the history of our literature and contemporary literature, literary theory, children's literature, folklore, women's and gender studies, creative writing and screenwriting, registers and dialects of the Welsh language, the language in professional contexts, translation and adaptation, the Welsh language and the media, the sociology of the Welsh language. This degree scheme includes Second Language and First Language pathways.
