Course Description
This is a course that responds to the increasing demand from employers for students with a high standard of skills in the Welsh language that can be easily applied to the workplace. You will study various areas related to Welsh language and literature with a strong emphasis on practical and vocational aspects. The course will also give you the opportunity to go on work experience with employers who use the Welsh language professionally on a day-to-day basis. Would you like to work in areas such as the creative industries and the heritage sector, broadcasting and the media, public relations and marketing, translation, language planning and public administration? This course will be an excellent starting point for you to aim for a career in one of these fields.
The living language of the present is Welsh in Bangor. On this course you will not only have the opportunity to study and enjoy one of the world's greatest Celtic literatures, but also the opportunity to follow more practically oriented modules that will prepare you for a career and a job. The course will enable you to research independently, to think originally, to get to know Welsh literature and Welsh culture in depth and to master the different tones of the language for professional and vocational purposes. You will also gain an awareness of the Welsh language in wider international contexts. What is the relationship of the Welsh language with other languages of the world? How does the language's fortunes compare with languages such as Basque and Irish? How have Welsh writers and poets responded to global themes such as slavery, the Holocaust and the ecological challenge of the modern industrial world?
Students from first and second language backgrounds are accepted to follow this course. It is also a natural progression for students who followed the foundation year Welsh for Beginners. It is also suitable for those who have reached a level of proficiency in Welsh, e.g. through the Welsh Learning Courses of the National Welsh Learning Centre.
'International Experience Year' and 'Year on Placement' options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to consider these options fully after starting your course in Bangor and you can apply to transfer to one of these options at the appropriate time.
